Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tuesday that his country is ready to return to the ceasefire deal reached with the United States in June if Washington does the same, in conciliatory remarks following the first exchange of fire between the two countries in a month. Speaking on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Kyrgyzstan, Pezeshkian said "if the U.S. returns to its commitments in the memorandum of understanding, the Islamic Republic of Iran will immediately reciprocate." The June agreement provided for an immediate ceasefire and started a 60-day negotiation period, with Iran clearing the Strait of Hormuz of mines and the U.S. ending its naval blockade. However, the most powerful force in Iran remains the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, pressing for greater concessions including Iranian control over the Strait. Meanwhile, the British military's UK Maritime Trade Operations Center reported two separate attacks on ships in and around the Strait of Hormuz on Monday — a tanker hit by three projectiles and another tanker reportedly stopped and adrift. Pezeshkian was due to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin later Tuesday at the summit, which has been billed as a counterweight to U.S. global influence.[1]

Hours after Russian ballistic missiles shook Kyiv overnight, balloons floated above a schoolyard in the capital's Obolon district on Tuesday. Bleary-eyed parents and children in festive outfits gathered to music, determined to celebrate the traditional start of the school year. But within seconds, an air raid alert sounded, and the crowd dispersed. Children's laughter gave way to distant explosions. Russian attacks killed at least 12 people overnight — the sixth straight day of heavy assaults on Kyiv. Ukraine's air force said Russia used ballistic, cruise and anti-radar missiles, along with 218 drones, about a third of them jet-powered. Six railway employees were among those killed when a ballistic missile hit a depot. Ukrainian students are beginning their fifth school year since Russia's invasion, with no end to the war in sight. Nearly a third of Ukraine's schools cannot open fully in person — 8,424 will operate in person, 1,306 remotely, and 2,211 in blended format. Since the war began, 318 education facilities in Kyiv alone have been damaged. The number of first-graders in Kyiv has dropped 40% since 2022. "Ukrainian education right now feels like a constant obstacle course," said Anna Putsova of the savED foundation.[2]

Prime Minister Andy Burnham will face lawmakers in the House of Commons on Tuesday for the first time since becoming U.K. leader six weeks ago, with wars in Europe and the Middle East weighing on his promise to kick-start the economy and ease the cost of living. Since taking office on July 20, Burnham has traveled the country promising renewed national optimism after the downbeat tenure of predecessor Keir Starmer, who announced Tuesday he would resign his parliamentary seat after 11 years. Burnham has announced modest money-saving measures including a tax cut on domestic energy bills and lowered levies on pubs. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, who shook up her top team on Monday, will finally get to grill Burnham when Parliament returns from summer recess. Burnham is expected to set out a vision of a more active but less centralized state, with greater public control over water, energy and transportation. He also faces pressure over Britain's overcrowded prisons and a contentious decision on whether to greenlight more North Sea oil and gas production — a move supported by Trump but opposed by clean energy advocates. Like other European nations, the U.K. must detail how it plans to fund defense spending to meet NATO's 3.5% of GDP target by 2035.[3]

With the end of France's summer vacation season, the election campaign to replace Emmanuel Macron as president next May is bursting to life. An unusually large and broad field of candidates is forming to lead the EU's largest country, its second-largest economy and only nuclear-armed power. Socialist leader Olivier Faure became the latest to declare his candidacy this weekend, joining more than two dozen others. After decades of trying, Marine Le Pen's fourth campaign is already shaping up as the strongest opportunity for her nationalist, anti-immigration National Rally party to take power. Polls have for months suggested Le Pen is the front-runner and could possibly sail into the winner-takes-all runoff as the first-round vote leader — a first for her. She got another boost in July when a Paris appeals court cleared her path for another presidential campaign by shortening a ban on seeking elected office. Behind Le Pen, the battle for the other runoff spot is fierce: veteran far-left firebrand Jean-Luc Mélenchon, two former prime ministers Edouard Philippe and Gabriel Attal, conservative Bruno Retailleau, and Green leader Marine Tondelier, campaigning before the expected birth within weeks of her second child. The Iran war has hit France's stagnating economy with higher energy costs, and Trump's presidency is rattling French faith in the trans-Atlantic alliance.[4]

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll is stepping down after 18 months on the job, the White House said Monday, in the latest departure of a top military leader during the Trump administration. No official reason was given, but tensions with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have been widely reported. Driscoll, a friend of Vice President JD Vance, is the latest in a series of shakeups of military leadership. In a separate development, the Supreme Court on Monday cleared the way for President Trump to continue construction of a grand 90,000-square-foot ballroom and military complex at the White House. In a 5-4 decision, the conservative-dominated court rejected a challenge from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, saying the trust lacks legal standing. Chief Justice John Roberts notably joined the court's three liberals in dissent. Trump celebrated on Truth Social: "We are living in the Golden Age of America, and this Building will be one of the Greatest ever constructed in Washington, D.C." The project is slated to cost at least $400 million. However, a conservative justice slammed the project as "unlawful" in a separate opinion, noting the court did not rule on the project's legality — only on the plaintiffs' standing to sue.[5]

With just over two months to go before the midterm elections, President Donald Trump is still sitting on most of his colossal war chest — and he's been growing his money pile instead of spending it. MAGA Inc. had more than $403 million at the end of July, according to the latest campaign finance filings, having brought in another $3 million over the course of the month and having spent practically nothing. That's more cash than any of the major party committees. Its only major outlay so far has been in South Carolina, where the group invested nearly $830,000 on a last-minute get-out-the-vote push. While the president and his team insist they'll open their wallet soon, frustrations are growing as Republicans try to maintain control of Congress. Trump is historically unpopular, with low marks on his handling of the economy and the Iran war. In Texas, Democratic nominee James Talarico has dramatically outraised scandal-plagued Republican Ken Paxton — $68.5 million to $9 million. "We need help from the president," Sen. John Kennedy told Fox News. Advertising rates are much higher at this late date, and some Republican strategists said it's almost certainly too late for outside groups to even purchase advertising in key Texas markets.[6]

A heavy sell-off in U.S. government bonds is gaining momentum, with anxiety about persistent inflation driving prices lower. The yield on the two-year Treasury rose to 4.35%, up significantly from about 3.50% at the beginning of 2026. The 10-year Treasury yield rose to 4.79% — the highest since January 2025. The bond sell-off is global: Japan's 10-year yield touched 3% for the first time since 1996, and Germany's 10-year yield hit a 15-year high of 3%. The U.S. debt surpassed $40 trillion two weeks ago, as defense costs and interest on the burgeoning deficit consume an enormous share of federal spending. Brent crude gained 1.7% to $92 per barrel on Tuesday, following a 2.7% rise on Monday, as the Iran war has curtailed traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, which once accounted for about 20% of the world's oil shipments. The national average for U.S. gasoline has been above $4 per gallon every day in August — the most expensive August at the pump on record. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh left the door open to a rate hike in a speech last week. The government's next inflation report comes out just days before the Fed meeting. Meanwhile, the August jobs report due Friday is expected to show employers added 65,000 jobs with the unemployment rate ticking up to 4.2%.[7]

Shares in fast-fashion online retail giant Shein fell after they began trading on Hong Kong's stock market Tuesday, after a long delay in the company's plans to list publicly. Shein raised about $1.7 billion, priced at HK$48.56 ($6.19) a share, in one of the city's biggest new share sales this year. But in early trading, shares fell to below HK$44 before losses narrowed to about 5% by midday. Shein's appeal has been built on ultra-fast, affordable fashion delivered from China to the West in days. The end of "de minimis" tariff exemptions in the U.S. and EU has raised duties for low-value parcels from China, including Shein's products. Higher logistics costs partly due to the Iran war have also squeezed the company's low-price business model. Shein recorded a $99 million loss in the first three months of this year, compared with a $395 million profit a year earlier. Earlier, Shein explored listing in New York and London, but increasingly strict scrutiny by Beijing and regulators led it to embrace its Chinese roots and switch to Hong Kong. The company's market value was roughly $27 billion — a fraction of its peak valuation. "Shein has probably missed its golden listing window due to the shift of momentum toward AI and tariffs," said Gary Ng of Natixis.[8]

Employers posted slightly more job openings in July, but the American labor market remained sturdy in the face of higher costs squeezing household budgets. U.S. job openings ticked up to 7.27 million in July from a revised 7.18 million in June, the Labor Department reported Tuesday. The JOLTS report also showed layoffs fell, but so did the number of people quitting their jobs — a sign of declining confidence in their prospects. Gross hiring dipped to 5.1 million from 5.3 million. So far this year, U.S. employers have added an average of 61,000 net jobs a month — unimpressive, but an improvement on 2025's below-10,000 average, which was the weakest hiring outside a recession since 2002. The unemployment rate remains at a low 4.1%, and jobless claims have come in low week after week. "The labor market is back in the 'low fire, low hire' mode," said Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union. "Companies are growing cautious as the war in Iran drags on and borrowing costs have spiked." Friday's August jobs report is expected to show employers added 65,000 jobs with the jobless rate ticking up to 4.2%.[9]

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission, along with 22 state attorneys general, filed a lawsuit against Amazon on Monday, alleging the e-commerce giant systematically concealed unfair charges in its digital advertising auction pricing. The complaint alleges that Amazon traditionally used a "second-price" auction mechanism — telling advertisers they only needed to pay the minimum bid to win — but in 2019, without notification, modified its auction rules and added an undisclosed surcharge called a "soft reserve price," driving up advertising costs. The FTC says Amazon made the hidden adjustment because it was "dissatisfied with the revenue" from ad auctions, and that over seven years the company has overcharged more than 1.2 million brands and sellers — including over 500,000 small businesses — potentially extracting tens of billions in extra revenue. The lawsuit is the latest in a series of legal battles between Amazon and the FTC. The case was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington. New York's attorney general led the coalition of states. The FTC is seeking monetary relief and a permanent injunction against the alleged practices.[10]

The death toll from catastrophic flooding in Nepal and China passed 1,000 on Tuesday, authorities said, as rescue teams worked to reach communities cut off by the disaster. Nepal's disaster agency reported 987 deaths counted there, with 3,916 people missing, including 583 foreigners. Chinese authorities reported 16 deaths in their latest update. At least 11,814 people have been rescued so far. The Aug. 26 disaster began with a glacial collapse in the Himalayas — a rockfall powerful enough to register as a magnitude 5.2 seismic event — sending rock, ice and meltwater into valleys below. Floodwaters swept away homes, buildings, roads and bridges. For rescuers, the immediate priority remains finding at least 900 workers missing from 12 hydropower projects damaged by the flash floods, about 500 of whom are believed to be trapped inside tunnels. Helicopter pilot Bimal Sharma, who has been flying rescue missions, said he was shocked by the devastation: "It felt like I was flying over an entirely different landscape." Climate scientists have linked the disaster to glacial lake outburst floods, which are increasing in frequency as Himalayan temperatures rise. "I can see the pain in their eyes. It's heartbreaking," Sharma said of those he rescued.[11]

A new academic year began across Congo on Tuesday despite concerns by parents and teachers that the country's Ebola outbreak still poses risks to children in the epicenter. The resumption of classes comes in the middle of a ravaging disease outbreak that has killed 2,950 people among 6,100 confirmed cases since mid-May. The union representing teachers in Ituri province, the epicenter, had called for a delay in restarting classes, but the government pressed ahead. Some schools recorded low turnouts. "I do not really see an increase in prevention measures," said Aimerance Vahweka, a parent in Bunia who is keeping her child at home. Education officials said they are equipping schools with noncontact infrared thermometers, hand sanitizers and hand-washing basins. Children aged 4 and under have the highest case-fatality rate of any age group at 60%. The outbreak, caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, is the fastest in the disease's history and has spread to more than 60 health zones. Health workers have gone on several strikes to protest delays in payments. Efforts to contain the disease have been hampered by a lack of an approved vaccine or treatment. "There are also significant logistical challenges, particularly in remote areas," said Greg Ramm of Save the Children.[12]

A specialist team equipped to search deep waters was due to arrive from Turkey on Tuesday as emergency crews pressed on with efforts to find 20 people missing after a ferry capsized off northern Cyprus. At least eight people died when the passenger ferry sailing between Kyrenia and Tasucu, Turkey, capsized Sunday afternoon. Among those unaccounted for were siblings Miray Bicer, 12, and Mehmet Asaf Bicer, 6, who had been visiting Cyprus with their family. Their mother, Ayten Bicer, 35, described the struggle to hold onto her daughter as the vessel overturned: "She was saying, 'Don't let go.' And I didn't let go of my daughter. I swear, I didn't let her go." But the suitcase fell and her daughter slipped from her grasp. Survivor Serkan Kunduraci said he escaped by hauling himself through a broken window, seeing children and others drowning in the sea. The cause of the capsizing remains under investigation, though rough seas and overloading are among the factors being examined.[13]

Air conditioning saves thousands of lives during heat waves but comes at the cost of worsening global warming, according to a new study by the Yale School of Public Health. "Everyone knows air conditioning works, but air conditioning from a climate change perspective is not an ideal," said epidemiology professor Kai Chen, the study's senior author. "It leads to more carbon emissions, then it accelerates the climate warming problem." The study found that while cooling centers and AC prevent heat-related deaths, the surge in electricity demand — often met by fossil fuels — creates a vicious cycle. This summer, extreme heat has battered communities worldwide, from Athens operating cooling centers during heat waves to record-breaking temperatures across the American Southwest. Meanwhile, scientists warn that 2026 could become the hottest year on record, eclipsing 2024, due to a "one-two punch" of accelerated human-caused global warming and a supersized El Niño. So far, 2026 is the third-hottest year behind 2024 and 2025, but El Niño's full force has yet to be felt. "Bigger shocks are on the way," climate scientists caution.[14]

A federal judge has ruled in favor of AI company Anthropic in its legal battle against the Pentagon, finding that the government's actions were "illegal and baseless." U.S. District Judge Rita Lin issued a 59-page ruling Thursday night that the Pentagon acted illegally by punishing Anthropic for its criticism of the Department of Defense's views on AI use. The dispute began in February when President Trump and Defense Secretary Hegseth accused Anthropic of endangering national security and designated the company a supply chain risk, after CEO Dario Amodei refused to allow unrestricted military use of Anthropic's technology for mass surveillance or autonomous armed drones. Lin wrote that the government's actions "were based on a desire to make a public example out of Anthropic for its 'arrogance' in criticizing the government, not based on any articulable basis to believe that Anthropic would actually sabotage its model." Notably, Anthropic's rival OpenAI made its own deal to work with the Pentagon just hours after the government punished Anthropic. Both companies are now ramping up for buzzy IPOs. The government is expected to appeal.[15]

The European Union rolled out a new team on Friday to rein in AI companies across the world, in one of the most aggressive regulations the high-tech sector has so far faced. Brussels aims to track the use of AI models for violations of its new regulations, like the publishing of sexually explicit material, fake photos and videos (deepfakes), and cyber threats to public infrastructure. The team will have the power to investigate and penalize companies that fail to comply with the EU AI Act, which took effect earlier this year. The move comes amid growing alarm over AI-generated deepfakes influencing elections, non-consensual intimate images circulating online, and AI-powered cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure. The EU's approach contrasts sharply with the more hands-off stance of the U.S., where federal AI regulation remains fragmented and the Trump administration has actively opposed restrictions on AI companies. The new Brussels unit will coordinate with national authorities across all 27 EU member states and can refer cases for prosecution. Companies found violating the rules face fines of up to 7% of global annual turnover.[16]

Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg laid out an ambitious vision of what artificial intelligence can do for the world, imagining a future where everyone has access to their own personal AI agent that can improve all aspects of their lives. In a sweeping 6,500-word essay published online, Zuckerberg argued that the biggest question surrounding advanced AI is not how powerful it becomes, but who gets to control it. He made a passionate case for open-source AI, in which developers make key components accessible for anyone to examine, modify and build upon — a stance that conveniently aligns with Meta's business model of distributing its Llama models freely. "The most dangerous scenario is not powerful AI getting released. It is if superintelligence gets locked up and controlled by a small number of labs, companies or governments," Zuckerberg wrote. "Safety will not come from putting power in one place. Safety comes from balance of power." The essay, which used the word "superintelligence" 60 times, outlined a three-part vision: AI that enhances individual agency, open infrastructure that prevents monopolies, and community-driven governance. Critics note that open-source AI also lowers the barrier for malicious actors, and that Zuckerberg's vision conveniently serves Meta's competitive positioning against closed-model rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic.[17]

The hashtag #IranCeasefire trended globally on Tuesday after Iranian President Pezeshkian offered to return to the June ceasefire agreement if the U.S. does the same. The most-shared post came from a former U.S. State Department official: "This is classic Iranian negotiating: offer the olive branch at the SCO summit with Putin standing behind you, while your Revolutionary Guard continues to attack ships in Hormuz. The gap between Pezeshkian's words and the Guard's actions is the entire story." Users noted the timing — Pezeshkian made the offer while meeting Putin at a summit explicitly billed as a counterweight to U.S. influence. Maritime tracking data showing two ships attacked in the Strait of Hormuz on the same day went viral, with one analyst posting: "Conciliatory words from the president, missiles from the Guard. The Strait is still a war zone." Others pointed out that the June agreement's 60-day negotiation period has long expired, and that Iran's conditions for the Strait's control are likely non-starters for Washington. The hashtag #StraitOfHormuz also trended alongside #IranCeasefire.[18]

The hashtag #GrokDeepfakes trended across X and other platforms this week after Britain's media regulator Ofcom launched a formal investigation into Elon Musk's social media platform X over its AI tool Grok, following an outcry over the generation and circulation of sexualised and non-consensual images of adults and minors. The probe, initiated under the Online Safety Act, reflects escalating concern among UK officials about generative AI on widely used platforms. The Internet Watch Foundation said its analysts had discovered criminal imagery of children aged between 11 and 13 that appears to have been created using Grok. On Wednesday, Musk said a new version of Grok had been released and urged users to update their app. X has limited Grok's capabilities for non-paying users after public outcry. Meanwhile, a lawsuit filed in the U.S. claims that Musk's AI company xAI allowed imagery of a woman's childhood sexual abuse to remain on the platform, and that Grok generated additional child pornography from those images. Critics, including UK lawmakers, are calling for regulation of the technology, pointing to gaps in existing laws. The case raises critical questions about AI's ethical use and social media's responsibility in preventing harmful content.[19]

The hashtag #KyivSchoolDay went viral on Tuesday as images of Ukrainian children in festive embroidered shirts gathering for the first day of school — only to be scattered by air raid alerts — circulated globally. A photo of 6-year-old first-grader Darii Yurko, wearing a traditional vyshyvanka shirt in a nearly empty schoolyard, became the most-shared image. His father Yevhen said: "Even like this, I still wanted something to remember this day by." The school principal considered canceling the ceremony, but the school has a shelter and children reached safety quickly. The story resonated deeply: first-graders in Kyiv have dropped 40% since 2022, from 28,500 to 16,600. Since the war began, 318 education facilities in Kyiv have been damaged, some hit two to eight times. One viral post read: "These children have never known a normal September 1st. Their entire school experience has been shaped by war." Another user wrote: "While the world debates whether Iran will return to a ceasefire, these kids are learning to read in bomb shelters." The hashtag #StandWithUkraine resurged alongside #KyivSchoolDay, as users shared images of underground schools in Kharkiv where children entered through tunnels for their first day.[20]
