Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian defended a recent memorandum of understanding with the United States as the best way to move beyond what he described as a situation of "neither war nor peace," saying the Supreme National Security Council believed it represented the best possible agreement. "There is not a single provision in this agreement that amounts to capitulation," he said. The 60-day deadline for ending the war and reaching an accord on Iran's nuclear program expired last week, but the two sides remain far apart on reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, the new hard-line head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Mohsen Rezaei, warned Tehran's neighbors in his most extensive public statement yet: "If (Trump) wants to do something, we will retaliate in a seismic manner." Rezaei said Iran would target alternative oil-shipping routes out of the Persian Gulf if neighbors join the U.S. economic war. Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, will lead a delegation to Tehran on Monday as part of ongoing mediation efforts to de-escalate tensions.[1]

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy publicly detailed for the first time his dispute with dismissed Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, saying his involvement in mass protests and calls for elections were "misguided." Zelenskyy also revealed that inaccurate information from the Defense Ministry about SpaceX's Starlink led to an awkward encounter with President Trump, who accused him of deception after Musk rejected Ukraine's use of Starlink over Russian territory. Zelenskyy disclosed alarming Patriot missile figures: Ukraine received 675 in 2023, 364 in 2025, and expects only 264 in 2026 — even as Russian ballistic attacks intensify. Russia could eventually produce up to 1,300 ballistic missiles a year, he warned. On the battlefield, Zelenskyy was optimistic: Ukrainian forces have nearly recaptured the Dnipropetrovsk region, with only 10 square kilometers remaining under Russian control. He predicted Ukraine could reach territorial parity by year-end. A Ukrainian drone also struck an Ozon warehouse in Russia's Orenburg region, while a Russian drone killed one person on an electric train in Ukraine's Kharkiv region.[2]

Kazakhstan voted Sunday in a parliamentary election expected to further strengthen President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's grip on power in Central Asia's largest nation. The pro-presidential Adilet party is widely predicted to win an overwhelming majority in the country's first election to a new single-chamber parliament called the Kurultai. The 73-year-old Tokayev, in office since 2019, initiated constitutional changes in March that merged parliament's two chambers and granted the president authority to appoint key officials. Last month, the Constitutional Court ruled the amendments effectively reset the clock on Tokayev's previous terms, opening the door for another seven-year term. The election comes amid economic strain — inflation hit 10.2% in February — and a crackdown on media freedom, with roughly 10 criminal cases against independent journalists. "In the run-up to these elections, repression has intensified sharply," said journalist Lukpan Akhmedyarov, who faces up to seven years in prison for publishing a list of Kazakh citizens fighting in Ukraine.[3]

After trade negotiations crumbled at the eleventh hour, President Trump's 50% tariffs on scores of Canadian imports kicked in Saturday, affecting about 5% of Canada's annual exports to the U.S. — roughly $20 billion in goods ranging from hockey sticks to wine, cement, honey, jewelry, furniture and cameras. Trump reached back to a long-dormant Great Depression-era law: Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, which authorizes import taxes of up to 50% on countries that discriminate against U.S. businesses. The law has never been used specifically to raise tariffs until now. No investigation is required, and there is no limit on duration. Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney promised "dollar for dollar" retaliation starting Sept. 8, targeting steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. No further talks are scheduled. The 50% tariffs come on top of previously imposed levies, including a 10% rate from last month. "Nearly all industries and professions are likely to see downstream effects from this spiraling trade dispute," warned one trade lawyer. The growing sanctions underscore Trump's willingness to risk breaking established alliances.[4]

Interest rates rebounded despite Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's efforts to put a lid on longer-term borrowing costs, a sign Wall Street investors remain worried about burgeoning government debt, heavy borrowing by tech firms for AI data centers, and the Federal Reserve's commitment to fighting inflation. The 10-year Treasury yield rose back to 4.69%, and the 30-year bond yield hit 5.23% — near a 19-year high. Bessent surprised markets by doubling the bond buyback program to $4 billion per operation, but the impact was minimal against the sheer scale of the market: the government will need to issue nearly $550 billion in bonds this quarter alone. The national debt topped $40 trillion on Wednesday, a staggering record. Meanwhile, Big Tech's deluge of bond offerings to finance AI infrastructure is giving bond investors more choices, pushing yields higher. All eyes now turn to Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's high-profile speech at Jackson Hole on Aug. 28. "Now the ball is in the Fed's court and the ball is really in Kevin Warsh's hands," said one analyst. Warsh was appointed by Trump after Jerome Powell's term ended in May, raising concerns he may cut rates to placate the president.[5]

Nearing the six-month mark of the Iran war and facing diminishing stockpiles of key weapons, the Trump administration is touting a crushing financial campaign against Tehran, promising an "economic D-Day" against a country that has withstood nearly five decades of American sanctions. Trump announced "unprecedented" economic warfare aiming to force Iran's leadership to end its nuclear program and fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Treasury Secretary Bessent threatened secondary sanctions on nations and companies doing business with Iran: "If you insist on doing business with them, the U.S. Treasury will put its full might and force against you." China and India are major buyers of Iranian oil. The UAE's decision to suspend trade with Iran over an alleged missile attack further isolates Tehran. But analysts warn Trump is refusing to learn from his predecessors. "The only thing the Iranian regime views as more dangerous than suffering from U.S. sanctions is surrendering to U.S. terms," said Ali Vaez of the International Crisis Group. "Pressure without an open door is an exercise in futility." Oil prices remain near $94 a barrel, feeding through to consumer inflation at 3.7% — well above the Fed's 2% target.[6]

Two people died and around half a million people were left without electricity across Latvia and Lithuania after a powerful cyclone brought rain and strong winds to the region on Saturday and into Sunday morning. "This seems to be the most severe storm in Latvia since 2005 in terms of its overall impact," said Andris Viksna from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center. Wind speeds exceeded 67 mph in the capital, Riga, and at many stations half the average monthly rainfall was recorded on Saturday alone. One person died in Jelgava, central Latvia, when part of a building collapsed, and another died in Lithuania after being hit by a falling tree. Over 200,000 residents were without electricity in Lithuania, with rail and public transport disrupted by fallen trees. Strong winds also battered Estonia, disrupting ferry services to islands. Northeastern Poland was also affected, with over 100,000 people losing power. Viksna noted it is "plausible" that human-caused climate change may have intensified the rainfall, though a full assessment was not yet possible.[7]

Hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians in Gaza face a daily choice between digging through garbage dumps for combustible materials to cook their meals or crowding around scarce charity kitchens with their pots, as shortages continued to grip the embattled enclave. The Kahlout family has tasked their 12-year-old son, Omar, with walking daily to a nearby dump to collect plastic and other materials they can use as fuel. He digs with his bare hands and fills a worn-out sack, then carries it back to the tent where the family burns it to cook what little food they have. "The situation has not improved at all," said Adam Kahlout, Omar's father, who was displaced from Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza to Deir al-Balah in the center. The family of eight lives in a makeshift tent. Photos from the garbage dump show children and adults climbing over mounds of waste, searching for anything that will burn — plastic, wood scraps, fabric — to keep their makeshift stoves running. The UN has warned that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is deepening, with food, fuel and medicine all in critically short supply.[8]

Chinese humanoid robots defeated human world records on the opening day of the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing on Saturday, as hundreds of robots marched in formation onto the field in a massive display of synchronized coordination. In a 100-meter sprint, a humanoid robot achieved 9.39 seconds, beating Usain Bolt's human world record of 9.58 seconds set in 2009. In standing high jump, a robot reached 2.88 meters, surpassing the human record of 2.45 meters set by Cuba's Javier Sotomayor in 1993. Both record-breaking robots were built by Beijing-based X-Humanoid. A robot from Chinese smartphone maker Honor also completed a 100m sprint in 9.32 seconds during a trial. More than 2,000 humanoid robots are participating in the five-day event across 51 disciplines and over 1,000 competitions, including table tennis, soccer, and boxing, held at the National Speed Skating Oval built for the 2022 Winter Olympics. The games come as China manufactures most of the world's humanoid robots, while the U.S. FCC has banned imports of new foreign-made humanoid robots, citing national security. The Pentagon also added Chinese robot maker Unitree to a list of companies with alleged Chinese military links.[9]

China said Sunday it was postponing its planned ambitious Chang'e-7 lunar mission, which was set to carry out explorations including searching for water ice on the moon. The spacecraft was originally set to lift off in the coming days from the Wenchang Space Launch Site on China's southern Hainan island. The China Manned Space Agency said in a brief statement that the mission "does not meet the launch conditions" and "cannot take place during the planned window this year." The decision was made following a "comprehensive assessment" based on the principles of "prudence, reliability and absolute mission success," without further elaboration. The seventh mission in the Chang'e moon exploration program aimed to make breakthroughs in key technologies, exploring permanently shadowed craters on the moon and conducting environmental and resource surveys of the lunar south pole. Chang'e-6 returned to Earth in 2024 with rock and soil samples from the far side of the moon in a world first. The postponement comes just days after the rocket was transferred vertically to the launching area on August 19.[10]

The mission to save NASA's sinking Swift Observatory was called off, dooming the telescope to a fiery reentry later this year. NASA and Katalyst Space Technologies announced the news more than a month after the startup's Link spacecraft rocketed away to the telescope's rescue. Katalyst said Link will not attempt to capture Swift and boost it to a higher orbit because of problems controlling the spacecraft. NASA paid $30 million for the rescue attempt, which was thrown together in under a year. Launched in 2004, Swift has spent over 20 years tracking some of the biggest explosions in the universe — gamma ray bursts and exploding stars. Intense solar activity caused it to lose altitude faster than expected. The rescue spacecraft went into an uncontrollable spin weeks after its July liftoff. "This is not the outcome we were working toward, but it does not change why this mission was worth attempting," said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman. As a consolation, Katalyst will operate Link near Swift to demonstrate future rescue capabilities. NASA's 36-year-old Hubble Space Telescope, also losing altitude, had been next in line for rescue.[11]

The hashtag #RobotBeatsBolt exploded on X as footage of a Chinese humanoid robot completing a 100-meter sprint in 9.39 seconds — 0.19 seconds faster than Usain Bolt's 2009 world record — went viral. The robot, built by Beijing-based X-Humanoid, achieved the feat at the opening of the World Humanoid Robot Games. A robot from Honor reportedly ran 9.32 seconds in a trial. Users debated whether robot records should even be compared to human ones, given the fundamental differences in biomechanics, power sources, and the fact that robots don't fatigue. Others noted the geopolitical dimension: the games come as the U.S. FCC has banned imports of new foreign-made humanoid robots, and the Pentagon added Chinese robot maker Unitree to its military-linked companies list. "China isn't just showing off robots — they're showing off an entire supply chain," one user wrote. Skeptics pointed to a video of a Unitree H1 robot that broke at the waist during a sprint demonstration, arguing the technology remains fragile. But optimists countered that the pace of improvement is staggering — last year's robots could barely walk, and now they're breaking world records.[12]

The hashtag #IranSeismicThreat trended as Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei's interview aired on state television, in which he warned neighbors: "If (Trump) wants to do something, we will retaliate in a seismic manner." Rezaei, named this month as part of senior appointments hardening Tehran's stance, said Iran would target alternative oil-shipping routes out of the Persian Gulf if neighbors join the U.S. sanctions campaign. Users debated whether this was a credible threat or a bluff. Some noted that the UAE's decision to suspend trade with Iran already represents a significant defection — the Emirates had been Tehran's most important re-export hub. Others pointed out that Rezaei's choice of "seismic" was deliberately ambiguous — it could mean military strikes, cyberattacks, or even support for insurgent groups in neighboring countries. Pakistan's announcement that army chief Asim Munir would visit Tehran on Monday was widely discussed as a last-ditch mediation effort. "Pakistan is trying to prevent a regional war that would devastate its own economy," one analyst wrote. The concurrent report of Iran-linked hackers shutting down a UK power plant added to the sense that the "seismic" threat may already be materializing through cyber warfare.[13]

The hashtags #BondMarket and #NationalDebt dominated financial Twitter this weekend as the U.S. national debt crossed the $40 trillion mark on Wednesday — just months after passing $39 trillion in April. Users shared the staggering statistic that the federal government has already paid $931 billion in interest on its debt through the first 10 months of the fiscal year — more than defense or healthcare spending. The CBO estimated the annual deficit will top $2 trillion this year. Treasury Secretary Bessent's doubling of bond buybacks to $4 billion per operation was widely mocked as a drop in the ocean — the government needs to issue $550 billion in bonds this quarter alone. Big Tech's massive bond issuance to fund AI data centers was identified as a new structural factor pushing yields higher. "The bond market is telling you: we can't borrow infinitely," wrote one prominent economist on X. All eyes are now on Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's Jackson Hole speech on Aug. 28. Traders are pricing a 35% chance of a September rate hike and 69% by December. The "bond market vigilantes" meme trended again as users warned the market may "veto" fiscal policy.[14]

The hashtag #ZelenskyyFedorov trended as the Ukrainian president's two-hour off-the-record briefing with journalists was published as a transcript on Sunday, revealing extraordinary details. Users focused on the Starlink episode: Zelenskyy said the Defense Ministry told him SpaceX had agreed to allow Ukraine to use Starlink over Russian territory, leading him to raise it with Trump — only for Musk to reject the proposal, prompting Trump to accuse Zelenskyy of deception. "He said that I had supposedly deceived him," Zelenskyy recounted. The Patriot missile disclosure shocked many: Ukraine received 675 in 2023, 364 in 2025, and expects only 264 in 2026 — a 61% drop — even as Russian ballistic attacks intensify. Russia could produce up to 1,300 ballistic missiles per year, Zelenskyy warned. The battlefield news was more positive: Ukraine has nearly recaptured the Dnipropetrovsk region, with only 10 square kilometers remaining under Russian control, and Zelenskyy predicted territorial parity by year-end. A Ukrainian drone strike on an Ozon warehouse in Russia's Orenburg region was also widely discussed as a sign of Ukraine's growing long-range strike capability.[15]
